Doula

I've mentioned before that I had a great doula helping me with Stevie's birth...I would totally recommend hiring a doula. Doulas are trained to be present at the birth to provide encouragement and support. They can also provide a lot of information/childbirth education, etc. to help you prepare.

I wish I would have had one there for Kendall and Wakelee's births. My two previous labor experiences were...uh...less than ideal....and I regret that things didn't go differently. The doctor and nurses are there with a certain agenda (getting the baby out), but their role is medical - they aren't really there to provide support to the mother. And a lot of times the husband "coach" isn't really sure what to do or how to help. Thats where a doula is really helpful.

Things didn't go exactly as planned this time, either (do they ever?), but it was a very positive experience and I was very happy to have Melanie there. I will definately have a doula next time, too!

If you're interested in learning more about doulas, or know anyone in the Longview area who would be interested in hiring a doula, here is Melanie's website... (she put my photo on there!)
