Stroller resurrection

I became desperate for a double stroller when I suddenly realized (last week) that I will soon have two babies at the same time. Someone recommended a certain brand/type to me, but it was $430.00 new, so I was checking Craigslist, trying to find one that was a more reasonable price...

I love this model because you can attach your own infant car seat, and both of the seats adjust to face front or back. I found one relatively cheap in town, but it was very dirty - I mean, cobwebs, dust, the works... I didn't want to pass it up so I bought it, brought it home, and hosed it off. I was not loving what was under the dust - black mildew stains! I mean A LOT and pretty much on every surface.....There was no way I could put the kids in this thing! It was hard to get a good photo because it was so bright outside, but if you look close you can see the spots...

I did some research on the internet and learned that TILEX (the mold & mildew remover formula with bleach) might remove the stains (hopefully without bleaching the fabric). I hate using bleach because I always manage to inadvertently ruin something, but I was desperate to save my precious stroller. I was really skeptical, because the other things I'd tried (soap, cleaner, vinegar) hadn't helped AT ALL. I tested the TILEX on the most inconspicuous part of the fabric I could find and it didn't discolor the fabric AT ALL. The instructions I found on the internet for cleaning strollers, camping gear, etc said to leave the TILEX on for 15 minutes, then to spray off, but most of the stains had totally disappeared within 5 minutes. I then sprayed everything down with the hose and resprayed the stubborn areas. Since the bottoms, covers, seats, sides, etc were all stained, this took a little while, but it was so worth it.

The "before" side (left side above) doesn't truly portray the awfulness of the black stains, but hopefully you can still tell how awesome this worked! I was really impressed that I didn't even have to scrub to get the stains off (even though I still did, just to make sure there were no nasty residuals!). Yay TILEX!
